Research Notes: Pachycephalosaurus

Main question for newsletter: What was the dome skull actually for? Need to cover the head-butting hypothesis + alternatives. Look for recent biomechanical studies.

TODO: Connect to series theme (biomechanical analysis → behavior insights). Montana fossils = good visual hook. Check if there are any 2024-2025 studies I missed.

The Mystery of the Dome-Headed Dinosaur

As alien as pachycephalosaurus may look to us, its distinctive dome-shaped head was used for something familiar.

The most widely accepted theory suggests these dinosaurs engaged in head-butting contests with rivals, using their reinforced skulls to compete for mates and territory

Biomechanical studies reveal that the dome could be up to 10 inches thick, composed of dense bone tissue capable of absorbing tremendous impact forces.

CT scans show the skull structure was remarkably well-suited for head-to-head collisions, with the rounded shape distributing impact forces evenly.

Fossil specimens from Montana show healed fractures on their domes, consistent with repeated impacts from combat.

I want to compare the head-butting to mammals, but I forgot what class of mammals does this.

These dinosaurs engaged in head-butting contests with rivals, using their reinforced skulls to compete for mates and territory — like bighorn sheep and musk oxen do today.

CT scans and finite element analysis show that the skull was remarkably well-suited for head-to-head collisions.

The dome's dense bone tissue — up to 10 inches thick — was built to absorb repeated impacts.

Several pachycephalosaurus specimens show healed fractures and lesions on their domes, consistent with repeated collisions. The damage patterns mirror what we see in modern head-butting animals.

The dome also appears to have been sexually dimorphic — males possessed larger, more robust structures. This is a common trait in species that engage in male-male combat.

I want to compare the head-butting to mammals. What class of mammals does this?

You're thinking of ungulates — hoofed mammals. Bighorn sheep are the classic example. Musk oxen, mountain goats, and ibex do it too.

The Mystery of the Dome-Headed Dinosaur

If the dome was just for display, you wouldn't expect to find healed fractures. But we do — over and over.

The combination of the structural reinforcement that has been found in the dome along with the healed fractures and the sexual dimorphism that researchers have observed all seem to point in the direction of ritualized combat.

These weren't gentle nudges. The forces involved would have been enormous — enough to kill a smaller animal outright.
